Wallace Roney – Jazz

January 4, 2008

wallace roney jazz

This is an album by an experienced trumpeteer who has played with jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Wayne Shorter.

The album features an interesting blend of jazz, funk and some advanced technology in the form of somewhat dated turntable-isms, which do not add much texture to the sound as the band never really attempts to build a wall of sound, but stays rather conventional. For example, Vater Time kicks off with an enthusiastic groovy feel and makes you a little bit excited. But it looses the edge quickly as very simple riffs which I would be embarassed of repeat.

Still, I found a couple of nice tunes with remarkable bursts of sharp melodies with reasonable soloing. Most of them are good old moody jazz: Inflorescent, Nia, Her Story, ending with Un Poco Loco – fast and optimistic.
