The Bronx III

There have been so far two essential rock’n'roll howls in my life that I always return to: those of At The Drive-In and Icarus Line. I think I’ve just found the third. The Bronx are compulsory.
Fucked Up – The Chemistry of Common Life

Now this is one great album. I never thought hardcore could go this far in wooing me on first sight. From the opening of Son the Father, the numerous layers of slightly washed away distorted guitars, I knew that this has to be something, and Fucked Up have really done it well. I don’t know what’s so special and punching about it. Maybe the 80s indie style guitar overdubs on all tracks and a shouting voice that’s actually not annoying floating above them. I feel like I must race to that sun pictured on the album cover.
Vivian Girls – s/t

An all-girl trio singing short punkish shoegaze songs washed with sweet feedback? I’ll take some. This is the colour of their music:

The Like Young – Last Secrets

The Like Young broke up in 2006, and Last Secrets is their last album. The guy and the girl are otherwise happily married. The songs go between power-pop, My Bloody Valentine-like slow drone and passionate garage indie. It sounds like it but it’s not quite sunshine music, all the time there is a taste of fall, lost desires and broken dreams. A short but intense, honest and non pretentious album.
Offspring – Smash

What better way to revive the early teen times for a moment than to listen to Offspring’s Smash, their most consistently awesome album, for a while.
I guess I got a bad habit
And it ain’t goin’ away, yeah
The Icarus Line
Lemme tell you – this is one of the greatest rock’n'roll bands in the recent history. And this is the chance to get all their releases so far at once. They’re loud, intense, manic and totally into it. Below I’m attaching a video for the song originally titled “Up Against The Wall Motherfucker”.
