Mumakil – Behold The Failure

Mumakil Behold album cover

I think this is the first grindcore album that I ever listened to. Hmm Six Feet Under don’t count right? How to explain the genre? It’s something that I listen to when something’s really wrong, or I just feel like I wanna hear something ultimately badass. 27 tracks people. Mumakil are always to the point.

Mastodon – Crack The Skye

Crushed by the work lately, it’s hard to find the time to collect all the recent impressions into more than a handful of words. I’ll just say that this is by far the best metal album that I’ve heard in a year or so.

Static-X – Cult Of Static

Haven’t heard these guys since the days of Machine. Well, it seems everything is in place, Wayne’s hair is still upwards, the sound crushing and soulfully soulless. Here’s to all the pain.

Sepultura – A-Lex

sepultura a-lex cover

I see Sepultura as one the most important bands in the history of metal. They’ve been around for quite a long time (since 1984) and continue to evolve, in a physical sense as well – A-lex is the first album without both of the Cavalera brothers. The sound on this concept album based on A Clockwork Orange is as raw and crushing as ever, with some really good groovy riffs (eg on What I do!, Conform, Strike).

So if you like it, remember to support the band (seems like they’ve become a bit of an underdog since dropping off Roadrunner) by buying the album when it’s out and go see them on their upcoming world tour.

Arch Enemy – Rise of the Tyrant

I rarely listen to metal these days, not because it has become too heavy for me, but because most of the music that comes out sounds predictable, bland and in effect, since it tries to be serious, quite boring. I was tempted to check out this Arch Enemy album, as the praise of their melodic death metal style I’d occasionally come across made me curious long time ago actually. And you know, it’s really good. Who would say that, for instance, I’d think of a song titled “The Day You Died” as brilliant. It blends the energy of thrash, crushed by the heaviness of death metal with Angela Gossow’s amazing growl vocals, and intercepted by memorable melodic guitar leads.

Xihilisk – EPTwo Special Edition

xihilisk eptwo album cover

Discovered this through a TorrentFreak article. Xihilisk says:

This is a Demonoid exclusive. I would describe the genre as experimental indie/electronica but it has elements of lots of other things including chiptune, post rock, metal etc.
It contains the original EPTwo(which was 6 tracks)remastered, and 3 new tracks which are probably the best i’ve ever done:

Tunnel Physics: This took 80 hours in total to make. Its obscene.
Theme for Something: Epic./
PLUSS: 12 minutes of improvised noise recorded with a dictaphone and produced up to make a journey into obtuse dynamics.

It’s by far the best release ive ever done (its my 11th album) and it took 18 months to make.

The guy is very talented and makes very colourful music that’s somewhere between daydreaming and slow drama. Check it out.

Opeth – Watershed

opeth watershed album cover

This is the first time I listen to Opeth, although it’s their ninth album already. Their songs are often longer than ten minutes, with variations going from death metal growling peaks to subtle acoustic arrangements for guitar, strings and piano. It’s clear that they’re very skilled musicians and the leader, Mikael Ã…kerfeldt, has many ideas from various musical backgrounds which are often both complex and captivating. It’s just that perhaps their melancholic prog metal might not be ideal for this turn towards summer…

This torrent also includes a video for the song Porcelain Heart.

Deftones – White Pony (Red Limited Edition)

deftones white pony red limited edition album cover

I was very happy to find a limited edition of one of my favourite albums of all time, DeftonesWhite Pony, featuring a nice bonus track “The Boy’s Republic” recently posted on Demonoid in FLAC format. Eight years on, I still enjoy every bit of its’ psychedelic heaviness and emotional intensity, from the first riffs of Feiticeira until the fading heartbeat drums on Pink Maggot.

High On Fire – Death Is This Communion

high on fire death is this communion cover

Metal used to be the music I listened to most back when I was 16, 17 or so. I usually don’t find it that interesesting nowadays, however I do occasionally check out some albums which reviews present as musically interesting, or beyond the average, which I now tend to classify as narrow-minded pretence or mental illness.

High On Fire are, Wikipedia tells me, generally classified as stoner metal or doom metal. Indeed, there’s that taste of guitars (if stoner means QOTSA to you, well, yes, you could imagine these guys as a mean version of them). The singer is not screaming or growling in an imitation of what some suppose his evil majesty sounds like – he’s mostly just shouting.

Death is this communion, bands fourth album, has received some good reviews. The riffs are powerful, imaginative, ranging from galloping, midtempo, to groovy even. Solos have their place and recognizable ideas. But, there’s diversity as well. For instance, Khanrad’s Wall proves that the band is capable of oriental acoustic melodies, while Headhunter is a remarkable euphoric drums-only track. This is one good album, I’m glad I found it.
