Would this blog be worth anything if I didn’t throw you some hard to find jazz? Of course not! Here’s an awesome guitar / piano / bass + drums trio. Tal Farlow is a great jazz guitarist.

Found this little gem, recorded 24 years ago, from a drummer that I know from the Keith Jarrett Trio.
The music on this obscure LP was used as the soundtrack for a video program. Jack DeJohnette is heard on synthesizers and is usually joined by trumpeter Lester Bowie. The performances are moody and has its colorful [...]

As one might expect, this is some dark, slinky jazz music that mixes lots of organic instrumentation (including guitar and some particularly effective trombone and cello) with mostly subtle programming. The opening track of “The Nothing Changes” is particularly effective, as a skeletal rhythm consisting of sparse upright bass strums and simple percussion provide a [...]

Same as it never was begins as if it’s an instrumental hip-hop album. And hip-hop really is the root of Herbaliser’s music, played by a mini orchestra around Londoners Jake Wherry and Ollie Teeba. But only a couple of seconds later it reveals its true kaleidoscopic face, made of glaring elements of funk, jazz, soul [...]

You’ve most probably seen Fred Astaire in old movies. Now, on this recording, he sings 34 jazz and swing tunes backed by a band led by Oscar Peterson. The songs were originally written for his films, by Gershwin and the like. Nice!

I believe this is the last recording of Jarrett as a leader of a band that’s not a piano trio. A 1976 recording where he also plays soprano saxophone, flute and percussion; with Dewey Redman on tenor saxophone, percussion; Charlie Haden on bass, percussion; Paul Motian, drums and percussion.

Oh finally I get a chance to check out the ten Scandinavian jazz outcasts Jaga Jazzist. I love it! This is awesome, probably as good as it gets at the moment when you mix jazz with one or two rock people in a band exploring electronic sounds. And it fits the winter time.
This is a [...]
