2008 favourites
Hey folks, happy new year and thanks for reading this blog!
Before 2008 is completely over, here’s my list of music releases that I’ve reviewed over the past year that I’ve been returning to most.
- The Mars Volta – The Bedlam in Goliath
- Cat Power – Jukebox
- Nine Inch Nails – Ghosts
- Beach House – Devotion
- The Kills – Midnight Boom
- Flying Lotus – Los Angeles
- Oasis – Dig Out Your Soul
- Maurizio Pollini – Chopin Nocturnes
- Paolo Fresu, Richard Galliano, Jan Lundgren – Mare Nostrum
- Beck – Modern Guilt
The plan was to publish much more movie recommendations, however many of them are sitting on my hard drive still unseen. I’ll try harder next year, and for now I’ll just highlight five, which I totally recommend:
- Man From Earth
- Into The Wild
- My Blueberry Nights
- Encounters At The End Of The World
- Zeitgeist: Addendum
That’s it, see you next year!
Amon Tobin – Adventures In Foam

This is a Ninja Tune reissue of the original Cujo (Amon Tobin) record from 1996, originally released on a small London-based label called Ninebar. Later on Amon Tobin became widely known for his atmospheric beats that incorporate drum’n'bass, jazz, hip-hop backgrounds.
Jay Dee

I first heard the late Jay Dee (or J Dilla) while listening to instrumental hip-hop radio on last.fm. He’s a masterful producer, worked with people like Flying Lotus and ?uestlove. His tracks really do stand with out when you listen to a stream. Here’s a full discography.
The Raveonettes – Beauty Dies EP

I’ve said that Lust Lust Lust was their best album, and they just keep getting better. Four new songs in a short and sweet fuzz package.
Franz Liszt – Dante Symphony

Most of my ideas of hell come from Franz Liszt. He composed both Dante and Faust Symphony which I got somewhere last year.
Jimi Hendrix & B.B. King – The Kings Jam

A rare album from 1968, when Jimi Hendrix and B.B. King came together for a jam session. Needless to say, they make those guitars weep real bad.
Airbourne – Runnin’ Wild

Ahh baby there’s no ballad shit here, just straight classic foot-stompin’ rock’n'roll! Ok seriously, as you might guess from the album cover, Airbourne may at times try too hard but Runnin’ Wild, the title track, is no doubt the best hard rock song I’ve heard in years. Something AC/DC can only wish they’ve written.
J. S. Bach – Christmas Oratorio

Well, I haven’t heard an oratorio since primary school; time to re-educate myself. Christmas oratorio is nearly three hours of orchestrated choir songs written by Johann Sebastian Bach for the upcoming days.
Brahms: Piano Concerto No. 2; Piano Sonata No. 1 – Sviatoslav Richter

Seems like I’ve been getting hooked to classical music lately. Can’t write much here as I feel like an infant in this world, just sitting around enjoying it’s beauty.
Aphex Twin – Selected Ambient Works Volume 2

An ambient classic, over two and a half hours of Aphex Twin’s anti-music. It’s very hard to describe it as on the surface it’s quiet, undefined yet you feel that it always reflects and creates emotions. There’s an air of feeling uncomfortable. It doesn’t have any pattern, it flows freely as a state of mind.
