Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks – Real Emotional Trash

Stephen Malkmus Real Emotional Trash album cover

shot through with new and now
the thrill of loving someone that you shouldn’t love
but it’s moving at the pace of the clouds
so pull your little crystal from the boulevard

Can he really make that good eccentric rock’n'roll for more than 15 years? Almost. I admit I have not liked any of his solo albums as much as any one of Pavement – probably due to lack of the mess. So far. In its spirit, I feel this one being dangereously close to Crooked Rain Crooked Rain. The twisting lead guitar is again underlining his vocal expressions, which in turn do not sound lazy as I thought they were getting as he’s gettin’ older. The band is more acid 70s than ever, jamming in the title track for over ten minutes. There are many details to charm the passenger. And it feels like meeting an old friend again.

Thurston Moore – Sensitive / Lethal

thurston moore sensitive lethal album cover

I’m such a Sonic Youth fan that I have to mention this. An hour of using “acoustic guitar as noise instrument”. Sensitive is a nice guy track, a 22 minute SY intro (or outro). Lonesome is short , lethargic and occasionally agressive. Lethal is someone voilently having fun.

Read some gossip here.

Spiritualized – Songs in A&E

spiritualized songs in a&e album cover

Oh happy day

I haven’t heard any news about Mr Spaceman for a long time, and a new prescription is welcome. This album feels like a maturing successor to Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space, only without noise, just harmonies and (ahem) confessions. As you might expect, simple chords progressions get propelled by gospel-style momentum of orchestrations. Some moments do seem underdeveloped though… but I’m satisfied.

The Best of Miles Davis & John Coltrane (1955-1961)

The Best of Miles Davis & John Coltrane (1955-1961) album cover

This is an absolutely soothing, curing and phenomenal set of tunes played by possibly two greatest jazz musicians of all time.

Note: This is the first time I post about a torrent on a private tracker. Demonoid is invite only, and if you’re not a member already then leave a comment below and we’ll see, I have a few spare invitations.

The Mist

the mist movie poster

The Mist is a movie based on Stephen King’s novel, portraiting a small town community trapped inside a supermarket surrounded by a mysterious and unnatural mist out of which oversized animals and insects occasionally attack them. Besides having lots of blood & gore, this is a very strong psychological thriller showing us well-developed characters, and the behaviour of a small community in extreme conditions of fear and danger.

There’s not much more to say without unnecessarily revealing the plot. I didn’t love the movie, that would be quite hard for me given the genre, and I do think that the ending is against basic biological instincts. However, it has made a powerful impression on me and I recommend it.

Portishead – Third

portishead third album cover

Portishead’s third, their first in ten years. I think that this is a remarkable album which I would recommend to anyone with any significant interest in music. Its’ gloomy atmosphere might not suit you at every occasion, but it is the depth and variety of delicate ideas in each song, ranging in style from vintage electronica and folk to prog-rock and jazz, that make it outstanding. Its subtle sounds get me into a feeling that reality can easily be paused for us to ponder on our thoughts and actions…

What a wonderful world. My favourite BitTorrent site is alive and well.

Raconteurs – Consolers Of The Lonely

raconteurs Consolers Of The Lonely album cover

To me, the most exciting moments in Jack White’s music are those when a track begins, you feel him there, he slowly begins to pick strings to slowly form a simple and powerful riff before blasting into a full jam, the sound of a man spontanously playing his rock’n'roll. On this album, the first two songs (Consoler Of The Lonely and single Salute Your Solution) are like that. In the rest, you will find a mixture of the sounds that have made up Icky Thump, last White Stripes‘ album, horns included, with some Americana style thrown in by the laid-back band.

R.E.M. – Accelerate

r.e.m. accelerate album cover

I have not been of clear thoughts recently, and thus have not had much time with myself to listen to new music. The new REM album is an example of something I anticipated but which has not impressed me. It is quite short (34 mins, most songs under three), it does mark a return to their older sound, the guitar is loud and riffs are there, Stipe murmurs but… so far I fail to sense urgency and passion. It is a step towards where they should’ve been going though. I’ll keep listening.

My Blueberry Nights

my blueberry nights

My Blueberry Nights is a wonderful movie about love, coping with loss, search of personality, being bold to let go of the old and explore a new life, the paths to which it can lead, communication between people, the unsaid but expressed in silence.

Some facts from Wikipedia:

My Blueberry Nights is a film directed by Wong Kar Wai, starring Norah Jones and Jude Law. It also features Rachel Weisz, Natalie Portman, David Strathairn and Cat Power. The director describes it as “a story of a woman who takes the long route instead of the short one to meet up with the man she loves.”

I haven’t seen any of Wai’s movies before, and I’ve read that some people call this one of his weaker works, however I have enjoyed the entire film and particularly how the important moments are emphasised with slight slow motion, touching music and realistic silence. Extra credit for Cat Power songs during the movie.
